Match Report - Saturday 21st February 2009
AFC Spartans 1 v Hambleden 3
Hambleden took a well deserved lead after 5 minutes against the league leaders; keeper Ross Hathaway's long kick evaded Spartans' defence and Matt Cook pounced to smash the ball against the post. Fortunately top scorer Steve Sanashee was on hand to net the rebound for his 15th goal of the season.
Cook was again involved on 14 minutes supplying a cross but Sanashee and also Jamal Maknin both failed to score. Then on 17 minutes Cook himself had a great chance but smashed just over from 12 yards.
After exerting a lot of pressure onto Spartans' defence, Hambleden gifted them an equaliser on 25 minutes. After 5 attempts to clear a Spartans attack, the ball came to Ali Nicol 25 yards out and the defender smashed into the top corner. 2 minutes later Alexander was booked for Spartans and Hambleden spurned another two or three chances, but the score remained level at the break.
On 54 minutes following Tom Martin's cross from the right, Adam Markwell headed wide. The 55 minute mark indicated the start of a flurry of cards for Spartans, beginning with a yellow for Horwood. Paget received a yellow on 57 minutes followed swiftly with a red two minutes later. Ali Nicol was also booked don 59 minutes. Alexander received his marching orders on 60 minutes along with Skinner who got a straight red for throwing a punch.
Hambleden took full advantage of a side in turmoil. On 61 minutes Markwell powered a shot over from 25 yards, then on 65 minutes Maknin finally scored with a header following Ryan Kemp's free kick.
On 80 minutes Kenrick Gordon ran clear to slot home Hambleden's third to finish off Spartans and Harwood also received a red card for dissent. Final score 1-3.
The lack of discipline by Spartans in the second half marred a great Hambleden victory, revenging the 10-1 home thrashing they received from Spartans on 13th December. However Hambleden haven't lost in the league since and now sit in 4th place.
TEAM: Hathaway, Martin (Hobson 62), R.Kemp, Markwell, Rodrigues, Gordon, Maknin, Mcleod (Lakovic 70), Cook, Brunning (G.Kemp 46), Sanashee.
Hambleden travel to Winchmore Hill tomorrow (Saturday), kick-off 2pm.
