Hambleden Wasps 3 - Fairford Leys 6

Hambleden kicked off their inaugural U13s game with a difficult home fixture against visitors Fairford Leys.

Fairford took the early advantage with a well constructed goal, making good use of their speedy forwards to catch Hambleden flat footed.

Fairford kept up the pressure and scored a further 2 goals within 20 minutes. ?On what was a very warm Sunday morning the referee called for a short drinks break with both teams getting used to playing on the large Hambleden pitch. This seemed to bolster the Hambleden team and shortly afterwards they reduced the deficit to 2 goals when Callum Donegan met a well taken corner to head in.

A further goal before half-time left Fairford with a commanding 4-1 lead and the game seemingly running away from Hambleden's control. The scoreline could have been even greater but for a quite superb diving save from Hambleden's stand-in goal keeper, Simon Murton.

However, the home team came out all guns blazing to score 2 fantastic goals early in the 2nd half from James Robson and Ben Palmer. With the scoreline now 3 - 4, Hambleden felt they were in with a chance and kept up the pressure for what was their best spell of the match.

Fairford's back line made very good use of the off-side trap and frustrated the home team forward's on a number of occasions. Hambleden looked like they were going to equalise when Ben Peers magically broke through the defence, however, a last gasp tackle from Fairford's excellent fullback just prevented Peers from scoring.

Fairford finally ran away with 2 further goals late in the 2nd half with the warm weather and pitch size taking its toll on some of the players. Hambleden now look forward to the return match on 30th November.
